Here we are at T.G.I.F. day again. After five days of commuting, putting in long and tedious hours in an office doing something that perhaps we don’t enjoy with some people we don’t especially like under bosses who don’t understand us, etc.; it’s T.G.I.F. day. (Thank God It’s Friday)
That means two days of celebrating, getting away from the rat race and putting on my party face is the thing I want to do. For many Americans, I have just described the weekend. Drinking and forgetting, getting high on whatever is available, one night stands, all in the name of alleviating boredom.
BUT WAIT!! Isn’t Friday for Christians, too? Two days away from gossip and profanity, power struggles and competition? There are two whole days for Christians to get together and love one another, rejoice in the fact of sins forgiven, sing praises to God, study the Bible with other excited Christians, go to fellowship meetings where no one will have a hangover in the morning.
Have Christians forgotten how to celebrate and party? We are joint heirs with Christ. (Romans 8:17) His enemies got mad at him and called him a “party man”. (Matthew 11:19) Christians live their lives in the presence of God and look forward to spending eternity with other Christians and the weekend is just preparation time. Sunday’ Bible Study and Worship and Discipleship is God’s time to manifest power in our midst.
Real Christians will be partying this weekend. Going to the church house will not be drudgery for them. They will go expectantly with smiles on their faces and sing and laugh and hug each other and say “brother” and “sister” and then go home with a clear conscience feeling like they just had a warm shower.
Party on, Christians! Your Master said, “don’t miss it.” (Hebrews 10:25)
“Thanks, Father, for the two-day break from routine! I know that You
will be hosting another big celebration and we will be glad. Amen”
