July 9: PRAYING FOR PROFIT?

Satan first said it and it has been repeated by millions since then: “Does Job fear God for nothing?” (Job 1:9) When Satan attacked Job’s life and character he said to God that Job only served God because God gave Job a nice family and a lot of money. Since that time, Satan has lied to many people that they should expect material success from worshipping God and going to church.
So, we have people doing foolish things: gamblers go to church and pray before playing the Lottery, prostitutes go to church and pray before walking the streets, men go to church and pray before asking the boss for a raise, etc. If the individual does not come up a “winner”, God and the church are dispensed of as you would toss away a rabbit’s foot. You may know someone who gave God the “tithe” because they thought it would pay off. Satan was surprised to discover that when Job lost his family, farm, and friends, he was still devoted to God.
Christianity is an entirely different value system from “what will I get out of this” and “how much will I make” thinking. The entire story of the sacrificial death of Jesus that is celebrated at Easter portrays this radical view. True Christianity is different. It is radical! It cuts against the grain of our American culture. The profit motive doesn’t apply.
Jesus died on the cross for you and your sin, not for his own. Jesus died on the cross for you so you could have eternal life, a life that he already possessed.
You need to go to church and pray and study the Bible for spiritual help and direction and for life after death. When you get your spiritual priorities straight you will probably have better sense about how to handle your financial benefits. That will be a fringe benefit of your new-found spiritual health.

“Dear God, it is reward enough in itself just to know You and have a
living relationship with you. Thank You for this foundation for working.
Amen”
